| Subject: Special Rank- Rank of Pontifex Maximus Explained Sun Jul 27, 2008 8:47 am | |
| The Pontifex Maximus was a very influencial and powerful position in the Roman Empire. The main task of the pontifices was to maintain the pax deorum, the 'peace with the gods'. To obtain this goal, they gave advice to the consuls, interpreted the omens, controlled the calendar and oversaw the rights of accused citizens. The Pontifex Maximus was responsible for a large collection of omens (annales maximi); every year, he wrote down the celestial and other signs, and added the events that had followed the omens, so that future generations would be able to better understand the divine will. Wisdom is the foundation of the Pontifex Maximus!!
The word Pontifex is sometimes explained as 'bridge builder', but is in fact related to the Etruscan word pont, 'road', and means something like 'preparer of the road'. The pope still calls himself Pontifex Maximus.
Therefore, the responsibilites of the Pontifex Maximus is to maintain and secure the wisdom and purity within the guild and ensure these are passed onto future generations of members. To oversee the rights of accused members of misconduct and that they are not abused to the extent of maltreatment. They shall recommend to the founder and consuls, along with reporting to them, the result of their findings in all matters concerning the road of wisdom the guild travels upon. | |
